Rolling with the Punches

Profile on Canadian MMA journalist Ariel Helwani for the 2019 issue of the Ryerson Review of Journalism magazine (currently in print only), with original interviews and photos. It covers his leap to ESPN in 2018 and his career leading up to the night of UFC231, and the landscape of combat sports journalism.

“Ariel Helwani is perched in a broadcast booth high above the newly constructed cage in Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena. Live at 6 p.m. on Friday, December 7, it’s the evening of the ceremonial weigh-ins prior to the next day’s UFC 231. Traditional Chinese Medicine in Modern Hong Kong Life

In summer of 2018, I went to Hong Kong for a two-week reporting project with the Ryerson School of Journalism. “Hong Kong 360” is a collaborative multimedia feature that uses panoramic video to tell stories about the city as it is, as it once was and what the future may look like. I chose to cover TCM, which represents a changing industry through this integral part of Chinese culture and incorporation of new technologies.

As a whole, HK360 has been recognized by the following:

  • Asian-American Journalists Association (Asia) 2019 award winner in International Multimedia

  • Emerge Media Awards 2019 second place winner for Multimedia features

  • Canadian Online Publishing Awards 2019 winner for Best Interactive/Infographic Story

Lessons on Humility from Greg Phillinganes

Phillinganes has worked with the likes of Michael Jackson, Eric Clapton, Stevie Wonder and more recently Bruno Mars and Kanye West. Through a collaboration with the Ryerson Music Den, FCAD and School of Performance, the Detroit-born artist and music director visited Ryerson for a rare masterclass and lecture. He regaled students, faculty and industry members with tales of his life in music.

Behind the Keyboard: Greg Phillinganes on making it in the music industry

Another report on Greg Phillinganes for Ryerson Folio Magazine, fully showcasing the masterclass and his career.

“As a music director, producer and keyboard player, Phillinganes has learned a few things about genres and authenticity in his 40-year career. During his two days at Ryerson in January, he left lasting impressions on young artists and industry personnel sharing what he’s experienced in the music business.”
